The Downhill Tax Nobody Trains For
Downhills are not “free miles.” They’re eccentric braking, a controlled series of micro-falls where your quads act like shock absorbers and your knees get the bill. Most hikers train for the climb and then wonder why the descent turns their legs into wet cardboard.
If downhill ruins your next day, it’s not a toughness problem. It’s a braking problem. You need technique that reduces impact and strength that can absorb load without panicking under fatigue.
Train this and you get more than less soreness. You get better footing, better confidence, and fewer sloppy steps when the trail gets steep and loose.

Technique & Protocol
Shorter steps, higher cadence, soft knees – stop “slam stepping”
Aim for stable platforms – avoid heel-strike drops onto loose edges
Step-downs → controlled descents → downhill repeats (progress slowly)
Use poles for stability, not for braking (brace less, balance more)

Pack Weight & Ruck Training
Load tolerance is not cardio. A pack changes posture, breathing, gait, and balance, and it multiplies what your feet and calves feel with every step. You can be “fit” and still fall apart the moment you add 25 pounds. Rucking is tissue tolerance training - shoulders, hips, feet, and core learning how to hold shape under load for hours. If you skip it, your body improvises on trail. Improvisation is how you get hot spots, numb hands, angry shins, and a low-grade rage at your pack straps. Start light: 10–15% bodyweight (or a conservative baseline you can own)

Incline is not altitude. You can train on a steep treadmill all year and still feel like you got humbled by a thin-air goblin at 10,000 feet. Altitude squeezes your margin: effort feels louder, recovery gets weird, sleep and appetite can go sideways, and pacing mistakes get punished fast. Balance, Reaction Time & Uneven Terrain
Uneven terrain is death by a thousand tiny corrections. Every step asks your ankles, hips, and core to stabilize on weird angles, shifting rocks, roots, and loose gravel. Do it fresh and it’s fine. Do it tired and people get clumsy. Clumsy becomes rolled ankles, toe catches, falls, and that constant bracing tension that drains your energy. Most gym plans don’t train this because it looks “unathletic” and doesn’t photograph well. The trail does not care.
