The Complete Hiking & Elevation Training System

Fitness built for the trail (not your gym).

Most hikers do not fail because they are lazy.

They fail because their training does not match the actual demand. The gym teaches effort in clean, controlled doses: sets, reps, machines, classes, mileage, heart-rate zones, and neat little progress markers. The trail does not care about any of that unless your body can still perform under load, on uneven ground, after bad sleep, with thin air, tired legs, and a pack slowly negotiating with your spine.

That is the gap Train to Trail Fitness is built to close.

The Complete Hiking & Elevation Training System organizes trail prep around the demands that actually show up outside: downhill durability, pack weight, uneven terrain, elevation, pacing, fueling, and recovery while moving.

Start with the Trail Readiness Quiz if you want to know where your current preparation is strong, where it is exposed, and what to focus on next.

The 5 Physical Demands of Hiking

The Downhill Tax Nobody Trains For

If your quads and knees aren’t trained for eccentric braking, you can be “fit” and still get wrecked by day one. Learn the technique and progressions that keep your legs alive for tomorrow.

Pack Weight & Ruck Training

A pack changes your posture, breathing, foot strike, and fatigue curve. Build tissue tolerance and pack-fit systems so weight stops stealing your form and your morale.

Elevation & Acclimation

You can train the engine and pacing, but you can’t “pre-acclimate”. This guide separates what’s trainable from what needs a field plan, including the first 72 hours.

Balance, Reaction Time & Uneven Terrain

Uneven terrain equates to hundreds of tiny corrections per mile, all while not tripping or rolling your ankle. Train stability, toe clearance, and foot placement the way the trail demands.

Recovery While Moving

Multi-day hiking requires recovery management. You have to show up tomorrow while yesterday still lingers. Learn the pacing rules, rhythm, & routine that keeps you moving.

Experience as Proof

Field-Tested.

Professionally Grounded.

Built for Translation.

This system is built from the overlap between professional training and real field consequences.

I’m Abbey Galloway, trail name Freda Heights. I’m an ACSM-Certified Personal Trainer, RYT 500 yoga teacher, outdoor recreation consultant, long-distance hiker, and the creator behind Type Two Fun.

My field experience includes thru-hiking the Colorado Trail, hiking sections of the Appalachian Trail, training in the Himalayas of North India, and moving through trail systems, backcountry routes, springs, coastlines, and mountain terrain across the U.S. and abroad.

My coaching background spans CrossFit, yoga, long-distance swimming, paddleboarding, sailing, rock-climbing expedition prep, thru-hike preparation, and outdoor endurance training.

That matters because hiking prep is not just about fitness.

It is about whether your body, gear, route, timeline, decision-making, and recovery systems still work when the trail stops being convenient.

The Complete Hiking & Elevation Training System brings those pieces together so your preparation is not scattered across random advice, generic workouts, and last-minute panic.

This is not performance theater. It is field-tested preparation for hikers who want to move with more confidence, clarity, and capacity.

Not Sure Where to Start?

Start with the Trail Readiness Quiz.

The quiz is built to help you identify the weak link in your current preparation: downhill durability, pack weight, elevation, uneven terrain, pacing, recovery, logistics, or overall training structure.

You do not need to know exactly what you need yet. That is the point of the system.

Take the quiz, get a clearer sense of where you stand, and choose the next step that fits your hike, your timeline, and your current capacity.
